We are now lucky to receive 20 to 30 qualified candidates for a few openings. The dynamics of law enforcement have shifted, making it increasingly difficult to attract individuals who meet our high standards.

As our jail population increases, the need for improved facilities becomes more pressing. The outdated conditions of the Kiesel facility require significant resources to maintain, leading to a call for comprehensive reform.
We are actively seeking solutions to address these conditions. Discussions with the community have highlighted the importance of modernizing our facilities to meet both current and future needs.
The Failed Jail Bond and Community Partnership
Recently, we proposed a bond to address the pressing issues within our jail system. Unfortunately, this bond was not approved by voters. However, we view this as an opportunity to engage with the community further and understand their expectations.
While the bond failed, we have developed alternative plans. The key takeaway from this experience is that the sheriff’s office belongs to the public. We must work together to find solutions that serve the community effectively.
Plans for a Medical and Mental Health Wing
In light of the challenges we’ve faced, we are moving forward with plans for a medical and mental health wing at the jail. This facility will address the increasing needs related to mental health and substance abuse, which have become critical issues in our community.
By utilizing funds from opioid settlements, we are seeking to allocate $10 million towards this much-needed facility. This initiative is not only a response to current needs but also a proactive step toward improving overall public health and safety.
